Workshop for independent sanitation stakeholders on the management of fecal sludge in Benin

From April 8 to 11, 2025, a capacity building program was organized in Cotonou with the stakeholders of autonomous sanitation - the Waste and Sanitation Management Company, the operator of the Sewage Sludge Company, the drain operators, The World Bank and Cabinet EDE International to improve the services of fecal sludge.
 

EDE MISSION CONTEXT

As part of the operation of the Fecal Sludge Treatment Plants (FSTPs), the Waste and Sanitation Management Company, with support from The World Bank and Cabinet EDE International, organized a workshop program for the benefit of various stakeholders in the sector:

  • authorized emptying operators;
  • the Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant operator - DELVIC Sanitation Initiatives;
  • the managers of the Waste and Sanitation Management Company responsible for managing the FSTs.

 

SERVICES PROVIDED

This training session was held from Tuesday, April 8 to Friday, April 11, 2025, and is part of a drive to improve the professional practices of various sanitation stakeholders. It aims to strengthen safety, service quality, and collaboration between them. The following topics were covered during the training session:

  • Best practices for fecal sludge collection, transportation, and disposal;
  • Prevention of health and environmental risks;
  • Current regulations and approval criteria;
  • Communication and collaboration between local authorities and the operator;
  • Monitoring and implementation of the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) and the Internal Organization Plan (IOP);
  • Management of complaints, emergencies, and incidents;
  • Monitoring of performance indicators and regulatory reporting.
